Description

Name: Paguron
Gender: Male
Type: Crustacean
Alignment: Protective
Height: 45 feet
Weight: 310 tons
Biography: Paguron is one of the monsters that makes up the guardian alliance, serving as Erik Tanner’s partner. Docile by nature, he is unafraid to approach humans and interact with them. In fact, he enjoys helping the citizens of Rantai, clearing rubble and debris from their streets and building levees to ward off raging storms. He is viewed as a valuable asset to the city and everyone in it, and is much beloved along all the coastal regions.
Further inland, however, Paguron is virtually unknown. Being dependant on the ocean, he cannot travel far from the coast and has not seen most of Tarrun’s larger cities. Likewise, he often cannot assist his allies because they are too far from the sea. Many see this as a critical weakness and claim that Erik and Paguron are worthless. Caitlyn and the others have publicly disputed this on a number of occasions, though, asserting that the duo are essential to the well-being of coastal settlements and serve as a first line of defense against any kaiju approaching from the East.
When facing such threats, Paguron takes a defense-centric approach. He moves slowly and hesitantly while in battle, eager to block attacks with his claws or retreat into his shell. If underwater, he will even submerge his body in sand or muck to further avoid attack.
Anchored to the shell’s exterior are a number of symbiotic life forms that help defend Paguron in battle. The most numerous of these are the giant sea anemones. These fleshy polyps are easily damaged, but heal at an accelerated rate. They are lined with stinging tentacles that can stretch out and ensnare prey, the largest of them being able to swallow a small monster whole.
Also attached to Paguron’s shell are four worms. Being spineless, they can stretch their bodies to great lengths and seize prey at a distance. They are apparently in synch with Paguron’s thoughts, attacking foes but leaving humans and allies alone.
Of course, Paguron does not rely on these creatures entirely. He is perfectly able to fight on his own, using his spurs and claws to battle foes at close range. Using his left pincer to pierce and saw, and his right to crush and smash, Paguron is able to utilize the differences in his claws to adapt to different styles of combat. Also, being heavy and low to the ground, he is a natural and highly adept grappler.
Though he is a competent fighter, Paguron has many restrictions that put him at a disadvantage. His symbiotes, for example, must feed daily- if they feel that their host is not supplying them with enough food, they will detach and stop defending him. Also, neither he nor his symbiotes are adapted for life on land, so he cannot stray from salt water for long.
Dominic Kyro (Rantai’s representative on The Grand Council) has suggested the construction of a canal system that could lead Paguron further inland, in order to aid other cities as he does Rantai, but so far the rest of the Council has refused on the basis that the project would be too expensive.

Trivia: Paguron has an underwater lair near Rantai where he spends some of his time. It is a large, naturally formed cave decorated with various materials scrounged from the sea floor, including shipwrecks and small segments of a live coral reef.
