Description

LEGION QUEEN

Powers and Abilities:

* Slow moving but versatile. Able to burrow underground and leap long distances.

* Sturdy exoskeleton provides armor.

* Highly developed sense of sight. Can "see" electromagnetism (electric currents, magnetic fields, etc.).

* Able to separate and extract the silicon from objects. She processes it within her body to create a resin for hive-building.

* Porous organs on thorax produce pheromones, letting Legion take direct control of her Soldiers.

* Can stab and impale her enemies with sharpened front legs. Her back legs deliver a ferocious kick.

* Thoracic arms can create a disruptive field of energy. Dissipates energy weapons and repels physical objects.

* Cranial “horn” (actually mandibles) can split apart to fire an extremely powerful beam.

* As a last resort Legion can produce a number of plasma whips if her mandibles are destroyed. Individually weak, but devastating as a group and limitlessly flexible.

History:

[Guardian of the Universe]

The next morning was quiet. The mysterious Sendai epicenter was nowhere to be found in the Miyagi prefecture and what little remained of the insect horde had continued to move Southerly. Their dead, however, littered the shore of Sendai Bay: after the attack Gamera had plunged into the sea, drowning his tormentors and no doubt sinking to the bottom to recover.

The Japanese Self Defense Force increased their efforts to eradicate the insects, following their movements via seismometers. It appeared that the creatures were congregating in the Nagano prefecture; assuming the worst, the JSDF braced themselves for battle and mobilized.

It didn’t take long for them to find their enemy. A gigantic hive, so large that it protruded from the ground, had risen in Komagane. The nearby onsens and ski resorts had been invaded by the insectoid monsters, and now reports of the “mysterious tremors” had returned as well. Homing in on the area, the JSDF launched a two-pronged attack: a ground team to rescue the locals and tourists and aerial strike force to bombard the hive.

The attack did well, but not for long: the swarm had already recovered it’s numbers, and now the epicenter was active again. It shook the ground as it moved toward the strike force, triggering an avalanche that engulfed the nearby resorts: including the one being intercepted by the ground team. Suddenly trapped under thousands of tons of snow, they could only watch as their insectoid enemies burrowed through the floor and abandoned them to defend the hive.

Caught unaware, the JSDF air team was now under siege by droves of flying insects. Soon, however, they would have a much worse problem. Bursting out of the ground, the swarm’s monstrous leader, Legion, reared her head. Firing into the sky with an enormous beam, she vaporized the Defense Force as the swarm of smaller creatures parted and dispersed. In only a few moments the creature had thwarted their entire attack.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the ocean, Gamera stirred. His wounds were not yet healed, but instinct told him there was no more time: the next monster of The Cycle had already appeared. Pulling in his arms and legs, Gamera launched from the sea and disappeared amid the clouds.

Back in Komagane, the JSDF had returned with reinforcements. Knowing now what the greater threat was, they ignored the hive and concentrated their fire on Legion. Their assault was formidable, but useless all the same: the behemoth queen was defending itself with a near-invisible field of energy, repelling every attack thrown at it. A second defeat seemed inevitable, but just as all hope began to fade a familiar form streaked across the sky.

Lowering to the ground with a challenging roar, Gamera seized the queen’s attention. Seeing their chance, the Defense Force broke off the attack and sent more troops to help with the ground team’s rescue. Down in the valley Gamera clashed with Legion, trying to hold her off. It was all that he could do to withstand the monster’s attacks: wounded and outweighed, he was at a terrible disadvantage. To make matters worse, now the Legion Soldiers were joining the fray as well.

Seeing their ally’s plight, the JSDF realized that the time to hold back was already over. Sending their air force back into the battle, they homed in on the unprotected hive and let loose every weapon at their disposal. The massive construct sank into the earth with a series of explosions, instantly drawing the fury of the swarm. With the Soldiers flying off to retaliate, Legion was left to face Gamera alone. Now the tenacious Guardian was making headway… but unfortunately, not enough. With her disruptive energy Legion was still repelling the majority of his attacks.

Taking notice, the Defense Force ordered their team to split: as one group continued to fight the Soldiers, the other raced toward Legion. Approaching from behind, they targeted the distracted monster’s arms with armor-piercing missiles. Fire and blood suddenly filled the air; a moment later six of Legion’s legs laid twitching on the ground.

Seeing his opportunity, Gamera charged toward the shell-shocked monster and grabbed hold of her horn. In a mammoth display of strength he pried her mandibles open, then tore them off completely. Wailing in pain, Legion shuddered and fell to the ground, eyes blackened and dead. With a triumphant roar, Gamera tossed the broken jaws aside and launched into the air, heading for the Legion Soldiers.

As he and the Defense Force blasted away the last of the swarm, however, Legion’s eyes began to glow an ominous red. Swiftly rising to her feet, she unleashed a multitude of seething, red whips, impaling Gamera mid air and yanking him out of the sky. With a thunderous crash he collided with the mountainside, disappearing in a giant plume of snow. Overcome by rage, Legion thrashed the air squad and scrambled toward the mountain.

Bloodied and weak, Gamera struggled to his feet only to be struck by more energy whips; Legion was already upon him, rapidly scaling the slope. With the end in sight, Gamera snarled and forced himself up: he had not come this far just to give up. Extending his arms, he grabbed Legion’s murderous forelegs as they raced toward him; under the burden of both her whips and her weight, Gamera stood his ground and fired a single fireball into Legion’s face.

Red flame filled the air, and with a giant explosion Legion flew backwards, her head nothing but a smoking stump. Falling back into the snow, Gamera watched her lifeless body tumble down the mountain before blacking out. With the last of the monster bugs defeated, the JSDF evacuated the rescued skiers and soldiers; now they would return to the arduous process of rebuilding.

History:

[Destroyer of Mankind]

With Sendai in shambles and the hive destroyed, Gamera had returned to the sea to recuperate. The JSDF, powerless and once again defeated, could only pick up the pieces and try to relocate the insect swarm. Unfortunately the mysterious epicenter had already disappeared, and with it, the rest of the creatures. They would have to track the bugs by monitoring the seismic activity in neighboring prefectures… then they would simply have to pray they would find them before Gamera.

A day later they found their lead and then some: A new hive, so massive that it protruded from the ground, had risen in Komagane. The nearby onsens and ski resorts had been invaded by the insectoid monsters, and now reports of the “mysterious tremors” had returned as well. Racing to get to the scene first, the JSDF launched the Japanese/British/American strike force that had been successful in Sendai.

Using the clouds as cover, the squad flew far and fast. They arrived in Komagane with time to spare and descended only slightly; with such long range weapons a head-on dogfight would not be necessary. Preparing their deadly payload, they watched the hive appear on radar and locked on. Unexpectedly, a second large object appeared.

The leftmost craft suddenly exploded; soaring above the clouds, Gamera had found them. The squad took evasive maneuvers, but it was no use: the jet-propelled turtle was every bit as fast as they were. Forced to defend themselves, they turned about to engage him in a dogfight.

Several minutes later, burning metal rained from the sky. Descending from the clouds unharmed, Gamera rocketed toward the hive. Hundreds of the angry bugs flew up to intercept him, but in an aerial battle the odds were stacked against them. Outpaced and immolated, they dropped like flies as Gamera neared the hive. Their ace, however, had yet to be revealed.

A pair of monstrous legs exploded out of the ground, catching The Destroyer mid-charge and smashing him into the ground. Burrowing up from the dirt, the insect’s queen, Legion, appeared. Towering over her fallen enemy, she thrashed him across the battlefield. Despite a frenzied counterattack she remained unharmed: the disruptive field of energy generated by her arms was more than a match for Gamera’s fire breath. With a single, powerful beam she brought him to his knees.

Lumbering back toward the hive, Legion summoned her soldiers and left him for dead. The insects swarmed over as he struggled to get up, covering him as they had before. The end seemed inevitable, but persisting as always, Gamera simply roared in frustration. He fired a single fireball as the bugs engulfed him… missing Legion, but striking the hive dead on.

With a tumultuous blast the entire structure blew to pieces. Furious, Legion stormed back to finish him off herself; with a single thrust she stabbed through his armor-plated chest and pinned him to the ground. As she raised her second claw to kill him, she could never have anticipated was that this was exactly what he wanted.

Finally close enough to attack without fear of her force field, Gamera pushed himself further into the spike and plunged his claws straight into the two unarmored parts of her thorax. The titanic monster wailed in agony as blood sprayed all over, but the worst had yet to come. There was a sudden shift in the Soldiers’ demeanor: the organs Gamera had destroyed were those that produced her pheromones.

No longer under her control, the Soldiers crawled off of Gamera and onto Legion. The queen was lame, and now she would be overthrown… swarming over her with thousands of gnawing pincers, they ignored her armor plating and tore open her joints, pouring into her body and devouring her from the inside out.

Falling onto his back, Gamera unleashed his fire breath on the entire group. Shrieking as they died, the Soldiers scrambled frantically to and fro, plainly visible inside the writhing, illuminated husk of their burning queen. Grinning sadistically, Gamera relaxed and slipped out of consciousness, leaving the JSDF to clean up the mess.
