Tarrun: Tokua [OUTDATED]

Tokua syntheticus is a leathery skinned quadruped that can be found in urban and suburban cities all over Tarrun. Commonly referred to as a Toku or Toko, T. syntheticus is a manmade species, having no true ancestors in the evolutionary sense, and is the direct result of genetic engineering. It is an E.T.O. (Experimental Transgenetic Organism) produced by Kymaera Industries, and was the first of it’s kind to be stable enough to be mass produced.
Tokuas contain a hodge-podge of vertebrate and invertebrate DNA, and only the bioengineers at Kymaera Industries know specifically what species’ contributed to their creation. They have allowed the disclosure of some basic information, however, and it is at least known for a fact that Tokus are mostly made up of DNA from snakes, toads, and assorted varieties of mollusk.
The common Toku was designed to fill the niche of domestic pet, having been bred to be gentle and low maintenance. The structure of their legs eliminates both the leaving of muddy paw prints and the need to clip nails, and their reptilian exterior never sheds and is 100% hypoallergenic. Toku are indiscriminate eaters and, though there are many pet foods formulated specifically to fulfill their dietary needs, they can survive on almost anything and do not need to feed often. They are also somewhat intelligent, and can be trained rather easily and in a relatively short amount of time.
Despite their mildly alien appearance, Tokus eventually gained favor in the public eye thanks to their adaptability and lovable demeanor. They have since become extremely popular house pets, especially in Allinos, and many subspecies and color variants have since been produced. They are equally respected in the scientific community, as T. syntheticus has presented no significant genetic flaws or behavioral problems since its creation twenty years ago.
